This morning we awoke to some very stormy skies. Turned out a thunderstorm was rolling in so we headed for the local diner to grab some breakfast before what was looking like it was going to be a very rainy day. By the time we finished breakfast it was pouring buckets and thundering, so we decided to head over to the local library to wait out an hour or so of the storm. Lo and behold, about an hour later the rain stopped and we climbed on our bikes and headed out over the hills.
We rode about 40 miles to the town of Madison, IN. We need to get an interview in Indiana, so with the storm this morning, we weren’t keen on pushing too far. We headed up the enormous hill in Madison to Clifty Falls State Park:
We paid for camping ($10 for a “primitive site”. That means no water, electricity or bathroom facilities. If you want to use the bathroom you have to upgrade your site and pay $21. We are longing for the days of the west coast’s Hike and Bike program…) and set up on the flattest ground we could find- hoping that by the time the rains came through again tonight we’d be safe and dry in the tent. Tomorrow we’re going to head into downtown Madison for breakfast and hopefully an interview before we cross back into Kentucky for another couple days.

After an amazing breakfast of two different kinds of pancakes, bacon and juice we had a few minutes to relax and enjoy the view of the Ohio river before taking off. With a cool breeze coming off the water Allen’s house is a wonderful place to sit and lose track of time.
We could not thank Allen and Shirley enough for their hospitality- it truly was a treat for us. Before hitting the road we snapped a couple photographs in the backyard.

Our main goal today was to cross into Indiana and find a bike shop. The rough gravel we had to ride the other night tore the outer lining of Mo’s rear tire. Bike shops are few and far between so she had to press her luck and ride. The tear got worse throughout the days but held together. Once again we are super lucky! We hung around the bike shop for a little while talking to other customers, some were picking up supplies to continue their training for an upcoming Ironman. We can not imagine training and competing in one of those events. Way to much running involved.
With a new tire we were ready to ride and our route skirted us around the edge Louisville. Unfortunately there was not a safe way for us to get into the city so we had to settle with photographing it from the other side of the river.

After another late day of riding we found our way into Charleston, IN. After a quick bite to eat we rode down to the state park to find ourselves all alone. The campground is about 2 miles back in the park so tonight we sleep to the sounds of the crickets.
The other big news is that we have officially crossed into Eastern Standard Time!!! No more accidental late night phone calls home. That’s good news for everybody.
