We’re back!

Hi! It’s been a few days since we’ve had an internet signal strong enough to be able to update our blog, but we’re back. We’re in Yemassee, South Carolina, making our way towards Savannah and then on to St. Augustine, FL where we start going west!!! Whoa!
Anyway, a brief recap of the past few days in photos…
We stayed behind a Ranger Station and right under an incredible fire tower:

We even got to climb up the tower and check out the view… Here’s the view from the top of our tent with the fly drying on the picnic table and our bags spread out everywhere.
Pretty cool stuff. We went on to Charleston and checked out the city for a day, making sure to take in the history, visiting some of the plantations and the oldest cemetery there which was pretty incredible.
Charleston was beautiful. Full of huge trees with Spanish Moss, beautiful old buildings, and pretty little streets to explore. We got to meet up with some friends from Mo’s high-school too, which was great and they showed us a sweet little restaurant and gave us some tips on what to see!
And the people! The people in South Carolina have been wonderful! Our only problem is that they have been so friendly that we can’t get any work done! We’ll sit and chat for hours and it’s lovely, but then we wonder where our day went!
For example, this is Shirley. She cooked us our first grits and they were really delicious! We sat at this diner for about two hours chatting with Shirley and some other folks there. But we can’t complain- the friendliness makes for some great interviews!

The scenery has been getting pretty quintessentially ”Southern”.  Cotton fields with barns, big old trees with tire swings, and sweet little houses with tons of land.
Our only real problem so far with this area has been the moisture! It’s warm and beautiful during the days, but drops way down to the high 30’s at night, so our tent just gets soaked with condensation and dew every night. We take every chance we get to dry it out:

Oh well. So from here (Yemassee, SC) we’re going on down to Savannah where we’ll take a couple days of “rest” and try not to bicycle. We originally wanted to bike for five days, then take two days off each week… but it has not worked out quite that way. Oh well. We’re starting to get a little tired, so this Savannah rest should be good for us.

Where the heck are we?

We are having some difficulty with our map- you might have noticed. We are in fact spending tonight in the backyard of a Ranger Station in Witherbee, SC. Last night we were in Pleasant Hill, SC behind a Firehouse. We’re still going South, still on track. We’ll get that map fixed up ASAP. Thanks for following Project Tandem!

Election Day Part Two!

On election day I met a really nice couple who were volunteering as poll runners for the Democratic party.  After speaking to them, Larry agreed to allow me to follow him throughout the day.  I took the opportunity to do a small photo story on him and to photograph the day in general.

In the morning this Baptist church had over 100 voters waiting in line, by noon only a few were left, giving the volunteers some much needed rest.

Mrs. Gordon volunteered to hand out “I Voted” stickers to voters as they leave.  She took this responsibility very serious following people out the door to make sure they got their sticker.
James R. Hall aka Jimbo the Clown rested after voting.
Voters lined up in the Conway Elementary school right outside the historic downtown. This polling station like most in the area had a record numbers of voters.
Volunteers at the Democratic party staging area waited for results.

It was great to have full access to photograph in the Democratic headquarters, staging area, and polling stations.  I would like to thank Larry and all the other citizens of Conway who greeted both Mo and I so openly, and to allow us to run around their city all day and photograph.

When I have time to sit down and edit the photographs and audio of Larry I will post the story.

Election Day!

And a big thanks to the Democratic Party Volunteers in Conway and the Bethel AME Church for being so welcoming and helpful!
